Reading and challenging an LCA in the bio-based chemistry sector

This course provides the tools needed to read the results of an attributional LCA (ALCA) in the context of bio-based chemistry. You will also learn to identify the elements that matter most when reviewing a life cycle assessment in this sector, regardless of its format (full report, summary, etc.).

  • Assess the methodological relevance and robustness of the data used in a bio-based chemistry context
  • Spot critical areas in the graphical interpretation of ALCA results


This course is delivered in partnership with the Association Chimie du Végétal (ACDV) and is based on their practical guidance for the environmental assessment of bio-based chemical products.

 

Day 1 – Morning

  • Exploring the structuring components of an ALCA
  • Identifying the issues behind both general and sector-specific structuring elements in bio-based chemistry
  • Overview of the main stages of an ALCA
    • Case study: EPD for hyaluronic acid

 

Day 1 – Afternoon

  • Overview of the different types of LCA results
  • Reading and representing a life cycle inventory (inputs and outputs)
  • Introduction to the principles of building an inventory
  • Key criteria for analysing and assessing an inventory
    • Practical exercise: an LCA case study on a bioplastic

 

Day 2 – Morning

  • In-depth reading of graphical representations of ALCA results
    • Identifying key drivers and significant discrepancies
  • Sector focus on bio-based chemistry: biogenic carbon and ex-ante prospective LCA

 

Day 2 – Afternoon

  • Applying a critical analysis framework
  • Small-group workshop with case studies
  • Identifying points requiring particular attention when interpreting overall results
  • Case study: comparative LCA of a linen shirt versus a cotton shirt

  • Small-group work
  • Practical exercises: reading and analysing LCA reports summarised for the bio-based chemistry sector
  • Course handbook provided to participants


Anyone required to read, interpret, or challenge a life cycle assessment, without necessarily conducting one themselves: LCA project managers, product managers, R&D managers, environmental managers, etc. 

Prerequisites

Ability to explain what a life cycle assessment is. 

  • Knowledge check at the start and end of the course
  • Ongoing assessment throughout the course: case studies, quizzes, practical exercises
  • Individual certificate of completion issued at the end of the course
