Eco-designing packaging: optimising its environmental impact

• Define the principles of eco-design and the associated tools
• Identify and prioritise eco-design opportunities
• Apply the ESQCV method and define KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)
• Understand the principles and process of life cycle assessment (LCA)
• Model the LCA of a packaging item using dedicated software

Day 1 – Morning

• Introduction to eco-design concepts
• Key steps of the eco-design process
• Group discussion: what defines eco-designed packaging
• Examples of eco-designed packaging (best and worst practice)

Day 1 – Afternoon

• Focus on the environmental issues specific to packaging: bio-based materials, end of life, refillability, reuse, regulation
• What tools are available for eco-design?
• Applying the ESQCV method
• Defining KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)

Day 2 – Morning

• Introduction to LCA methodology
• Presentation of the ASKOR tool – packaging module
• Hands-on LCA using ASKOR: modelling

Day 2 – Afternoon

• Hands-on LCA using ASKOR (continued): interpreting results and comparing them with the issues identified on day 1
• Creative session: exploring eco-design solutions
• Organising and prioritising eco-design opportunities
• How to build an eco-design action plan, illustrated with a worked example

• Lectures
• Group discussions
• Practical exercises using a temporary ASKOR licence, EVEA's software for environmental product assessment
• Case studies and hands-on work with a real dataset
• Course handbook (provided to participants)

Prerequisites

• Knowledge check at the start and end of the course
• Ongoing assessment throughout the course: case studies, quizzes, practical exercises
• Individual certificate of completion issued at the end of the course
