Modelling a life cycle assessment (LCA) in openLCA (experienced LCA practitioners)

Modelling a life cycle assessment (LCA) in openLCA (experienced LCA practitioners)

This training course introduces the main functions of the openLCA software and provides hands-on practice for participants who already have experience modelling in another LCA tool.

Learning objectives Programme Teaching Methods Who is this training for? Assessment methods
  • Explore the structure of a database in openLCA, including data types and how they relate to one another
  • Apply the key modelling steps in openLCA: creating processes, setting parameters, and modelling allocation
  • Navigate the results analysis interface in openLCA

  • Introduction to openLCA: its place in the LCA tools ecosystem, the philosophy behind the software, and typical use cases
  • Presentation of the case study
  • openLCA structure: organisation of projects, databases, and reference data (flows, processes)
  • Guided exercise: modelling processes in openLCA — creating flows, defining providers, and applying an allocation method
  • Navigating the results analysis interface: contribution tree, category grouping, and Sankey diagram
  • Guided exercise: defining modelling parameters and running a parameterised calculation
  • Guided exercise: importing a project

  • Instructor-led presentations
  • Demonstration-based learning with hands-on software use
  • Practical exercises: modelling a simplified LCA (limited input and output flows)
  • PDF training materials provided to participants

Any professional involved in conducting or overseeing life cycle assessments: engineers, consultants, CSR or environment officers

Prerequisites

  • Ability to carry out the stages of a life cycle assessment: goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory, impact calculation, and interpretation
  • Experience modelling in at least one LCA software tool (other than openLCA)
  • Prior use of the Ecoinvent database

  • Knowledge test at the start and end of the course to validate learning outcomes
  • Ongoing assessment throughout the course: case studies, quizzes, practical exercises, and more
  • Individual certificate of completion issued upon finishing the course
