Modelling a life cycle assessment (LCA) in openLCA (beginner LCA practitioners)

This training course introduces the main functions of the openLCA software and provides hands-on practice. It is designed for participants who are familiar with the fundamentals of LCA but are new to LCA modelling. Through concrete exercises, the course puts into practice all the core LCA concepts covered in the "LCA Fundamentals" training.

Learning objectives Programme Teaching Methods Who is this training for? Assessment methods
  • Navigate the openLCA software interface with confidence
  • Apply the different stages of an LCA using openLCA's main features
  • Implement the modelling steps for a product in openLCA
  • Use the results analysis and interpretation features in openLCA

DAY 1

  • openLCA within an LCA approach
  • LCA concepts applied to the case study: goal definition, scope, functional unit, and preliminary life cycle outline
  • Discovering the openLCA interface, organising projects, and navigating a database structure
  • Understanding the different data categories and their relationships (flows, processes, product systems), and the role of providers in a model
  • Guided exercise: defining a modelling structure and modelling a product in openLCA

DAY 2

  • Completion of the guided exercise: modelling a product in openLCA
  • Navigating the results analysis interface: contribution tree, category grouping, and Sankey diagram
  • Guided exercise: configuring modelling parameters
  • Guided exercise: importing a model and running a comparative analysis

  • Instructor-led presentations
  • Small group work
  • Practical exercises based on case studies
  • Training booklet provided to participants

Any professional required to conduct a life cycle assessment who has completed an LCA fundamentals training or holds equivalent foundational knowledge of LCA.

Prerequisites

Ability to carry out the stages of a life cycle assessment: goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory, impact calculation, interpretation, etc.

  • Knowledge test at the start and end of the course to validate learning outcomes
  • Ongoing assessment throughout the course: case studies, quizzes, practical exercises, and more
  • Individual certificate of completion issued upon finishing the course
