Modelling a Life Cycle Assessment in SimaPro

Modelling a Life Cycle Assessment in SimaPro

This training introduces SimaPro's core functions and develops practical proficiency through hands-on application. Building on LCA fundamentals, participants work through concrete exercises covering every stage of the assessment process.

Learning objectives Programme Teaching Methods Who is this training for? Assessment methods
  • Navigate the SimaPro interface with confidence
  • Apply each stage of an LCA within SimaPro using the software's core functions
  • Implement the full range of product modelling stages in SimaPro
  • Use SimaPro's result analysis and interpretation functions

Module 1 — Process-based modelling (2 days)

Day 1

  • SimaPro within an LCA workflow
  • Key LCA concepts applied to the case study: goal definition, scope, functional unit, life cycle outline
  • Data in SimaPro: sources and structure
  • SimaPro architecture
  • Guided exercise: defining a modelling structure and implementing it in SimaPro
  • Guided exercise: modelling a product using a process-based approach

Day 2

  • Completing the guided exercise: process-based product modelling
  • Guided exercise: using SimaPro's result analysis and interpretation functions
  • Guided exercise: configuring a parameterised model
  • Introduction to analysis groups
  • Guided exercise: importing a model and running a comparative analysis

Module 2 — Product stage modelling (1 day)

Day 3

  • Introduction and familiarisation with the new case study
  • Importing case study processes
  • Guided exercise: product stage modelling (assembly, life cycle, waste scenario)
  • Advanced modelling functions in SimaPro — introduction and application: additional life cycles, waste disposal scenarios
  • Advanced modelling functions in SimaPro: disassembly and reuse
  • Independent exercise: configuring a model across multiple scenarios
  • Analysis and interpretation

  • Structured presentations
  • Small-group work
  • Practical exercises based on case studies — open-enrolment sessions use a shower gel and a bar of solid soap as modelling subjects
  • Training workbook provided to all participants

Any professional required to conduct life cycle assessments who has completed an LCA fundamentals training or holds an equivalent grounding in LCA methodology.

Prerequisites

  • An active SimaPro licence on the day of the training
  • Working knowledge of LCA methodology: goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory, impact assessment, interpretation, and related stages — acquired either through prior LCA fundamentals training or equivalent experience

  • At the start and end of the training: knowledge validation test
  • During the training: ongoing assessment of learning progress through case studies, quizzes, practical exercises, and similar activities
  • Individual certificate of completion awarded upon conclusion of the training
