Modelling agro-based products through life cycle assessment (LCA) with SimaPro

Modelling agro-based products through life cycle assessment (LCA) with SimaPro

This course will help you gain a clearer understanding of the environmental issues associated with products derived from agricultural resources.

Learning objectives Programme Teaching Methods Who is this training for? Assessment methods
  • Map the French and European methodological and regulatory frameworks
  • Model and/or adapt an agro-based product using SimaPro
  • Use dedicated databases
  • Interpret the environmental impacts of agro-based products

Day 1

  • Introduction to the challenges of LCA for agro-based products
  • Standards and regulatory context (ISO, environmental labelling)
  • Existing methodological frameworks (e.g. PEF)
  • Overview of databases and their specific features (ecoinvent, Agribalyse, WFLDB, Agri-footprint)
  • Modelling the main agricultural practices (e.g. fertilisation, crop protection, deforestation)
  • Practical exercises: modelling and adapting data for different types of crop production (annual, perennial, exotic) and livestock production

Day 2

  • Identifying relevant environmental indicators and analysing the results of the practical exercises
  • Conducting sensitivity analyses on the case studies
  • Wrap-up exercise applying key concepts to agricultural products intended for different end markets (e.g. food, cosmetics, textiles)
  • Summary and discussion of the challenges involved in valorising agricultural resources

  • Lectures
  • Practical exercises using SimaPro software (a temporary licence is provided for the course)
  • Case study: crop production and primary processing (e.g. oil), livestock production and primary processing (e.g. milk, butter)
  • Digital handbook provided to each participant

This course is aimed at teams from R&D, innovation, engineering design, environment, CSR, and marketing, across all sectors

Prerequisites

  • Implement the stages of a life cycle assessment (LCA): goal and scope definition, life cycle inventory, impact assessment, interpretation, etc.
  • Use the SimaPro software: build and edit a model, run a calculation, analyse results with SimaPro

  • Knowledge check at the start and end of the course
  • Ongoing assessment throughout the course: case studies, quizzes, practical exercises
  • Individual certificate of completion issued at the end of the course
